September 2009 - Construction of the Art & Children’s Museum is almost complete.  The alarm and elevator have been tested and Museum staff are using the basement for storage.  A fundraising event for the Museum took place on July 24 in the building before the artwork arrives.  The funds raised will go towards Museum operations.  The Bellingham-Whatcom Public Facilities District, City of Bellingham, and Whatcom Museum Foundation are negotiating a lease for the new building.

Background:
On July 13, 2004, the BWPFD purchased real property at 216 Grand Avenue, Bellingham, as the future site of the proposed 36,000 square foot Art & Children's Museum. A national design competition was conducted in 2004, with the jury selecting Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects as the winners on January 29, 2005. 

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 2, 2007.
